Chemist
Silvia Fustinoni is an Associate Professor of Occupational Medicine at the Department of Clinical and Community Sciences, University of Milan. She is also Head of the Environmental and Occupational Toxicology Laboratory at Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan.
Her research focuses on the assessment of human exposure to toxic substances in both occupational and environmental settings, with a particular emphasis on carcinogens. Throughout her career, she has developed novel analytical methods based on mass spectrometry for measuring chemicals in biological samples, including blood, urine, saliva, and hair, and has contributed to the development of innovative biomarkers for evaluating human exposure to toxic substances.
Her recent studies have addressed a variety of topics, including pesticide exposure in agricultural and rural areas, biomonitoring of the general population and children exposed to multiple urban pollutants, analysis of epigenetic biomarkers and their alterations following benzene exposure, and the use of urinary and salivary cortisol as stress indicators.
She is affiliated with the International Commission for Occupational Health and serves on the scientific committees of Occupational Toxicology, Rural Health, and Metal Toxicity.
Within the MAMELI project, Silvia Fustinoni will supervise the monitoring of environmental pollutant exposure through biomonitoring, which involves the detection of pollutants and their metabolites in easily accessible biological matrices using separation techniques coupled with mass spectrometry.
