Giovanni Sanesi

Giovanni Sanesi is a Full Professor in the field of Silviculture, Planning, and Forest Ecology at the Department of Soil, Plant, and Food Sciences, University of Bari Aldo Moro. His scientific activity focuses primarily on: a) ecological planning of forested areas, including wildfire prevention; b) silviculture, including urban forestry; and c) human health and green spaces.

He currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the MUR Cofin – PRIN 2022 project FREEDOM and the MUR Cofin – PRIN/PNRR 2022 project MILETO.

In the recent past, he has coordinated numerous national and international research projects, including the H2020 project proGIreg – Horizon+. He is a member of Units 6.14.00 Urban Forestry and 8.01.02 Landscape Ecology of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations and collaborates with FAO within the Silva Mediterranea working group on Urban and Periurban Forests.

As a delegate of the University of Bari Aldo Moro, he is among the founders of the Nature-based Solutions Italy Hub, whose mission is to promote the conservation of natural areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems through NbS capable of transforming Italian cities into urban environments integrated with nature and biodiversity, aiming to enhance the well-being of both humanity and the planet.

Within the MAMELI project, Giovanni Sanesi will contribute his expertise in greenness studies, focusing on the analysis and evaluation of urban and periurban green spaces in terms of vegetation cover, ecological quality, and ecosystem benefits. His work will specifically address the impact of green spaces on environmental sustainability, community well-being, and the mitigation of climate change effects.
